FIRST LEGO League Challenge August Team Blast

 August Team Blast

I hope everyone is settling in to their back to school routines. The FIN staff is excitedly preparing for the MASTERPIECESM Season!  The image on the left is a brief overview of this season’s schedule.  It is important to note that event preferencing will take place earlier this year to help our staff and volunteers plan for their events.  That means teams must be nationally registered with two coaches through YPP by September 1 in order to participate in qualifying tournaments.
Detailed schedules of all FIRST in SHOW season events will be published on Saturday, September 9 in conjunction with the FIRST Tech Challenge Season Kickoff.  Those will be communicated via email, social media, and posted on our blog.

In the meantime, please let me know if you need any assistance getting registered, I am here to help!

In this email, you will find training opportunities, registration information, as well as the latest on House Enrolled Act 1382, and much more.  I hope you will join me for our next Coaches Corner Zoom Call on Tuesday, September 19.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to me anytime.  I can be reached via email at tthompson@firstindianarobotics.org or you can schedule a call with me using this link.

All the best,

Trisha

FLL September Coaches Corner

Our next Coaches Corner will be Tuesday, September 19 at 7:00 PM ET/6:00 PM CT. During these virtual meetings, we share best practices for coaching a FIRST team, provide essential coaching resources, and discuss necessary administrative tasks. Every Coaches Corner will end with a Q&A session.

If you have topics you would like to learn about or materials you want us to cover, please let us know!  Email Trisha at tthompson@firstindianarobotics.org with suggestions or questions.

FIRST Indiana Robotics is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

House Enrolled Act 1382

We did it! Thanks to your continued effort and dedication, there will now be an anticipated $3.5 million available from the state for competitive robotics for schools.

We know many of you are anxiously awaiting instructions on how to access this funding, and we expect to know more by the end of August.  FIN Staff will be hosting a series of virtual Town Halls when we get that information from the DOE to answer any questions you may have. We will also send a team blast to update you when we have instructions on how to apply.  In our playbook we have a “course”  that outlines what we know at this point.  There is a toolkit of resources for you to use to be ready for the application.

Training Opportunities

Thanks to our friends at FIRST Nevada, we have some new training to offer our FLL coaches!  If you visit the FIRST Indiana Robotics Playbook, you will find a folder titled FIRST LEGO League Self Guided Training, where you can view and work along with a narrated slide presentation to learn more about robot building and programming.  These training sessions are geared toward coaches, but can be shared with team members as well.

If you would like to attend an in-person training, Avon High School’s Roboriole Robotics will be hosting a Season in a Day workshop on August 26th from 9am-3pm at Avon High School. You can register here: https://forms.gle/CGEgr1U3XnnCn7qz5

Superior Steam Scrimmage

The Superior STEAM 4-H Club will be hosting it’s FIRST LEGO League Challenge Scrimmage again this year on October 28th at the Bedford Campus of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.  This event is free and open to the public, robot matches will start around 10 am, and the event will conclude with an awards ceremony around 4 pm.

Register at:  www.superiorsteam.org

Consent & Release Form

Good news!  FIRST HQ has modified their Consent & Release Form so that a separate Indiana Form is no longer necessary!  This means that all of the forms your team members’ parents need to fill out are in the FIRST dashboard, and you will only need to print that roster to bring to competition.

FIRST Mentor Network

Is your team in need of mentors?  Did you know that you can set up a FIRST Mentor Network profile in your dashboard and then your team will be visible to potential mentors in your area.

Visit the FIRST Mentor Network site – https://info.firstinspires.org/mentor-network

After setting up your profile, start posting links to it on social media.  Create a one-pager and share with your local chamber of commerce.  Share it with your local sponsors to encourage mentorship.  Take a flyer with you to local outreach events and hand out to adults.  Create a poster with a QR code encouraging people to sign up to be mentors.  Use – canva to create your poster- printing is inexpensive.
